It is important to protect your teeth from damage and ensure that no serious oral health disease develop as a result of poor oral hygiene. One can ensure a healthy and beautiful smile just by understanding how to properly protect your teeth and keep them stronger.

  1. Brush Your Teeth Twice Daily

The general recommendation by dentist is to brush at least twice a day, once early in the morning and once at night before bed time. Brushing before bed gets rid of the germs and plaque that accumulate throughout the day.

  1. Don’t Neglect Your Tongue

Plaque can also build up on your tongue which leads to bad mouth odor and several other oral health problems. Make sure to brush your tongue every time you brush your teeth.

  1. Practice Good Brushing Technique

Hold your toothbrush at an acute angle – aiming the bristles toward the area where your tooth meets your gum. Gently brush with circular short back-and-forth motions. Brushing too hard or with hard bristles can hurt your gums. Brush your teeth for two minutes. Remember to brush the outside, inside and chewing surfaces of your teeth.

  1. Use Fluoridated Toothpaste

Fluoridated toothpaste strengthens tooth enamel which prevents tooth decay. Fluoride remineralizes weakened tooth enamel, slow down the loss of minerals from tooth enamel and prevents the growth of harmful oral bacteria.

  1. Drink More Water

Water is the best beverage for our oral health. It is recommended to drink water after every meal. This can help wash out some of the negative effects of sticky and acidic foods and beverages in between brushes.

  1. Know When To Replace Your Toothbrush

Bristles deteriorate with time and usage hence we should change our toothbrush every two to three months (or sooner if the bristles are frayed or have become irregular)

  1. Add Mouthwash To Your Routine

Rinsing with an antimicrobial mouthwash after brushing will kill more oral bacteria and aid in plaque removal. After you brush and floss, swish vigorously for 30 seconds twice a day.

  1. Floss Your Teeth

Flossing help us stimulate the gums, reduce plaque and keeps the interdental areas clean. Flossing once a day is usually enough to reap these benefits

  1. Avoid Harmful Food and Beverages

Many instances of tooth decay can be largely attributed to a poor diet, which consists of foods high in sugar and other harmful carbohydrates. In order to protect your teeth to the fullest extent, try and avoid too much intake of harmful foods and drinks, such as coffee, sweets and other such products.

  1. Visit Your Dentist Regularly

By visiting the dentist for a dental cleaning and checkup regularly, you can ensure good oral hygiene and protect your teeth and remove any plaque that has hardened and become too tough to remove through brushing. It is recommended to visit your dentist at least twice a year.
