We searched PubMed, MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, and references from relevant articles for publications dating from June 1, 2014, to April 1, 2020. We searched for the Medical Subject Headings terms “Opioid-Related Disorders” or “Analgesics, Opioid” and “Substance Withdrawal Syndrome”. We tried to select articles from the past 5 years as indicated by our search dates but also included relevant, older, highly cited articles (from references) and articles of historical importance. Medications to help with opioid use disorder
In this review, individualized care did not always include shared decision-making however; it was also described by several treatment matching approaches, such as as-needed-dosing 40, 46, 90. Regardless of the specific design chosen, these findings imply that comprehensive assessments and flexibility in service design and delivery (at a clinical and organizational level) supported individualized care. The first objective was to determine which PCC principles have been described in substance use disorder treatment settings, and the results revealed that therapeutic alliance was the most frequently described principle. The first plausible explanation for this is the longstanding tradition of therapeutic alliance in psychotherapeutic research and practice 100. In the present review, two-thirds of the references offered primarily psychosocial treatments (e.g., cognitive behavioral therapy) for substance-related disorders. In this discipline, therapeutic alliance receives significant attention given its importance in predicting counseling outcomes 32, 100.

Given the heterogeneity of the illness, tailoring treatment to the individual patient’s unique history, makeup and symptomatology is important and will continue to gain momentum as the standard of care for clinical practice. We report findings from four systematic reviews evaluating various digital platforms for smoking/tobacco use among adolescent age group 38, 39, 40, 41. A review evaluating antitobacco mass media campaigns suggests that these media campaigns can be effective across various racial/ethnic populations for smoking prevention, although the size of the campaign effect may differ by race/ethnicity 39.

Residential or inpatient treatments can be very effective, particularly for individuals with severe SUD and those with co-existing conditions. A quality improvement project by Waugh13 implemented a dedicated curriculum that included tools to assist inefficiency and accuracy of documentation. In addition, it is emphasized that leadership must be committed toprovider accountability for timely, accurate billing. Finally, the need for anemphasis on trainee compliance with timely documentation is noted to beimportant as faculty must wait for the note from the trainee before they canprovide attestation and submit billing. A systematic review was conducted to identify recently published studies thatreport on improvements in medical coding and billing accuracy, clinicaldocumentation, and reimbursement rate.
As with any depot formulation, clinicians should monitor injection-site reactions (e.g., pain, swelling, bruising, pruritus or redness) persisting for more than 2 weeks. Most of the trials in the included review have shown some evidence of effectiveness, with persistence of effects over the medium and longer term. The review concluded that the effects of family-based prevention interventions are small but generally consistent and also persistent over the medium to long term. While respect has been described in broader conceptual analyses of PCC 29, 101, information regarding why these attributes were important among people with substance use strengthens its interpretation in this context. Examples of these reasons included clients’ safety 79, 102; to gain clients’ trust 45, 63, 103; and to reduce stigma 63, 96, 104. These defining attributes are especially salient when considering that experiences of stigma are common among people with substance-related disorders 105–107 and have been identified as barriers to treatment 12, 14.

Other potentially effective drugs include gabapentin, tiagabine, vigabatrin, memantine (an NMDA antagonist), lamotrigine (a glutamate release inhibitor), oxcarbazepine, leviracetam, valproic acid 58, flumazinil and valproate 59. Carbamazepine primarily blocks voltage sensitive sodium channels, meaning that fewer of these channels are available to open, and therefore reduces excitability. It has been shown to be as effective as benzodiazepines for improving sleep and reducing cravings and psychological distress, although there are concerns over its tolerability and lack of protective effects against seizures 60. Topiramate (an AMPA/kainite inhibitor) can be given in doses up to 300 mg daily and reduces the percentage of heavy drinking days and improves health 61. It has been shown to be more effective than naltrexone 62 but less so than disulfiram 63.
The findings contribute evidence that can be used to support a comprehensive and evidence-based conceptualization of PCC with implications for its implementation and evaluation. However, we understand that individuals who are struggling with mental health concerns may be using alcohol or drugs to cope. For this reason, our facility provides inpatient detox services for adolescents aged and adults so that these individuals can rid their bodies of the substances they have been using prior to entering treatment. Our detoxification services allow individuals to withdraw from alcohol, benzodiazepines, and opiates in a safe environment. High readmission rates after initial hospitalization with COVID-19 were observed in single-arm studies.
